Kelly Kearns helping TSA FC with Success

Tucson Soccer Academy FC has a True Team Mom

Kelly Kearns is a soccer mom, just not in the conventional sense. Instead of driving her team around in a minivan, she drives her team with a hard-working attitude. Rather than dispensing orange slices at halftime, Kearns dispenses slicing passes from the backline. Wearing the captain’s armband, the mother of three has helped Tucson Soccer Academy FC bolt out to a 5-0 start in its first season in the Women’s Premier Soccer League. TSAFC's Lopez more than a Defender - a Destroyer

Strong Finish

There’s a “D” next to Kaitlyn Lopez’s name on the Tucson Soccer Academy FC roster. As any soccer fan knows, the letter stands for defender. But in the first two matches of the team’s inaugural season, it might just as easily mean destroyer. While TSAFC breezed to 5-0 and 7-0 wins over St. George (Utah) United, the 19-year-old has already tallied four goals. Read more of Dave Ord’s story on TSAFC’s Kaitlyn Lopez in Friday’s Arizona Daily Star.

TSA Joins WPSL

Tucson Soccer Academy (TSA) is proud to announce it has accepted an invitation to join the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL). The WPSL covers the entire United States and is the most competitive and elite league for women players entering or playing in college as well as women desiring to play at the professional level.

Tucson Soccer Academy FC will be the only team from Southern Arizona joining the league and only the second team from Arizona, joining Del Sol from Phoenix. The current schedule will have the Tucson Soccer Academy FC team playing home and away with the Utah Starzz, Salt Lake United, St. George United and Phoenix Del Sol. All home games will be played at Kino Sports Complex.

The team will be coached by members of the TSA staff, consisting of Amy Garelick, Todd Garelick, Charlie Kendrick, Charlie MacCabe, Dave Cosgrove, Lisa Fraser and Jeff Rogers.

Tryouts for the WPSL TSA FC Team begin mid-April and will continue through late May.

U12F Firecrackers win Silver Bracket at Ft Lowell Shootout

It was a great weekend of soccer for the TSA U12F Firecrackers, starting Friday night with the Soccer Olympics in which they took first place in the accuracy shooting competition. The weekend culminated with an exciting championship game between the TSA Firecrackers and the North Scottsdale SC Jaguars. The Firecrackers fell behind 2-0 after ten minutes of play, but took control of the game from that point on, managing to tie the game at two in the second half. The game was decided on penalty kicks 3-1, in favor of the TSA Firecrackers.

U10M Fireballs top pool bracket at Ft Lowell Shootout

Our U10M boys had an incredible time - 3 games (a tie and two wins) to come out on top in their pool bracket.  They came together as a team and played solid soccer.  Here’s a photo right after the game on Sunday at Lincoln. They were so excited, they called their coach (Bryan Dejonghe) to tell him the good news as he is unable to attend their weekend matches.

U9M Kingsnakes win silver medal in Ft Lowell Shootout

Our second place finish was decided by points with a clear advantage after a 1-1-1 record. It was an exciting experience to play on Sunday morning for a winner take all opportunity. The flight 1 team from Atlas had won both their games going into the match by scores of 7-0 and 9-1. We played them as tough as possible and ended up losing 3-2. We also had fun and success in the Saturday night Olympics, our group of Kingsnakes won the silver in the shooting accuracy.

The Mike Nicholson Scholarship

Minh Vu receives the 2008 Nicholson Scholarship

Mike Nicholson loved soccer – watching it, playing it, coaching it.  He believed that youth soccer provides kids with opportunities to learn skills they won’t get anywhere else – opportunities to work successfully as part of a group, to volunteer to help those with less and to think “outside of” one’s self, to learn to think independently in support of the larger strategy, and to see the value in working for the greater good.  He would be very pleased and proud to know that a scholarship established in his memory will support a player who exemplifies the qualities that he believed are most important for our kids to develop:  responsibility, personal accountability, and good citizenship.

They played to a 1-1 tie until the closing minutes when Ballard FC Blue eked out a 2-1 victory.  Alexis Torres, Maya Aldaghi,  Leeandra Smith, Savanna Schmidt, Jenna Glad and Ashley Estrada all contributed goals in the impressive showing. RSL-AZ Defeats Houstonians FC 2-1 to Claim Doug Hamilton Memorial Cup

Victory Gives RSL Youth Development Program Second Major Tournament Win of the Summer

SALT LAKE CITY (Tuesday, July 29, 2008) ?C The Real Salt Lake Youth Development Program picked up its second piece of hardware this month thanks to the RSL-Arizona Under-17 Team, which defeated Houstonians FC (TX) 2-1 thi s morning to claim the Boys U-17 Super Group title at the US Club Soccer National Cup VII in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Marco Carrillo’s conversion of a Jann Nash corner kick in the 60th minute would stand as the tournament-winner, allowing the second-year RSL-Arizona outfit to lift the Doug Hamilton Memorial Cup as the tournament’s U-17 champions.

RSL-Arizona, which qualified for National Cup VII via its Region F tournament win in California last month, began its title quest in Virginia Beach with a pair of 1-0 victories in group play over Shattuck St. Mary’s (MN) and Crossfire SC Premier (WA) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Those wins allowed RSL-Arizona a chance to advance to the final with a win or tie in its final pool play contest against Howell SC Strykers (NJ) on Monday, and a 1-1 draw would put the team atop its group on seven points and thrust the squad into the championship game against Houstonians FC. RSL-Arizona used a goal from Minh Vu just two minutes into this morning’s final to take a 1-0 lead, but the Texans would equalize in the 15th minute to even the score at 1-1. Carillo would come to the rescue with his heroics at the hour mark, and RSL-Arizona would hold on from there to give the Phoenix-based squad a national championship.

"For RSL-Arizona to win the cup memorializing the best MLS general manager ever, Doug Hamilton, is truly a great honor," said Real Salt Lake GM Garth Lagerwey.  "Full marks to our kids for their perseverance and tenacity in winning this championship and conveying further glory on themselves and RSL on the heels of our SUM Cup victory.  There are certainly some players in our youth system we may see playing in MLS in the next couple of years."

This morning’s win for RSL-Arizona comes just weeks after three members of the team also helped a combined Real Salt Lake Under-17 squad (using players from the RSL-Utah, RSL-Arizona, and RSL-Florida programs) capture the SUM Cup title over 13 fellow MLS youth development programs.  The US Club Soccer ch ampionship marks the second national tournament appearance for an RSL-Arizona team in as many years, as the RSL-AZ Under-16 Boys squad finished third in the 2007 Super Y-League National Championships after winning the Rocky Mountain Division regular season title last summer.
