Tomey gives 98 Boys Red team a talk in Honolulu

Who are you going to see in Honolulu this time of year? Of course, former UA football coach Dick Tomey. He visited with the 98 Boys Red team before Tuesday’s game in Honolulu. Super cool! But that’s Tomey.

Here’s a story about how the team got to Hawaii.

Coach Jeff Rogers thought the building process would take a while. Heck with the building process. The 98 Boys Red team are champions.

“Dean Nourse (assistant coach) and I couldn’t be more proud of our team,” said coach Jeff Rogers. “They played a flawless first half, jumping out to a 4-0 lead and were extremely focused and disciplined the entire match. We were so motivated and driven to succeed, and that is always the foundation of any championship-caliber team. Their performance set the tone for the day and I sincerely believe it gave confidence to our other teams ... everyone felt like this was TSA’s day after the way we played."

In reality, the 98 Boys Red team together came quicker than he thought. “Usually it takes a year to two years before you see the true integration,” Rogers said, “but it was almost immediate-- they had a style and had a real chemistry.”

The Boys are a mix of the 98 Boys Red of old and the old TSA Oros. Former rivals turned friends and teammates. The question was how would the chemistry be? Well, it’s turned out very well and for Rogers, who took over the group from Dave Cosgrove this season, said “it’s been an absolute pleasure working with them.” They’ve taken to his coaching. "So much credit goes to Dave and Rogelio Hernandez (former head coach for the Oros), they instilled all the qualities that have made them successful. These kids are skillful and have a tremendous work ethic due to their time with Dave and Rogelio"

Rogers said he had no preconceived notions of how the team would do, but he saw promise in the group. Again, it was just how they would jell. And they did, winning the U15 State League and doing well all season. Rogers said any one of the eight teams could have won the league it’s that strong of an age group. "It’s probably the deepest age group in the State, and our record is even more impressive because of that---we didn’t have an easy game all year."

“The turning point was when we played CCV in the first state league game of the year,” said Rogers, who was expecting a loss. “But we won the game and that’s when the light bulb when on for us, this could be a special team.”

The 98s are 25-4-6 overall.

TSAFC Earns Second Straight Win, 7-0, in WPSL Home Opener

TUCSON – In a rematch of last week’s season opener, TSAFC (Tucson Soccer Academy FC) used a balanced scoring attack to overwhelm St. George United, 7-0, in front of a large crowd at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson.

In its first-ever WPSL home match in franchise history, TSAFC came away with the three points in style, controlling the match from start to finish and getting goals from six different players.

“It was a great home season opener, and we’re happy to come away with a solid win,” said Head Coach Amy Garelick.

TSAFC (2-0-0, 6 points Big Sky – North Division) took an early lead against St. George (0-0-4, 0 points) when Karina Camacho was played in on goal in the 4^th minute and Tamra James put in the rebound after an initial save. In the 21^st minute, Camacho scored, finishing a great cross from the left side from Jordan Davidson. The lead was 3-0 at halftime after Davidson used a great burst of speed to lose her marker and beat the keeper with the outside of her right foot in the 41^st minute.

TSAFC’s sustained dominance continued throughout the second half; Kaitlyn Lopez made it 4-0 with a strike from outside of the box into the top corner in the 48^th minute, and Laura Pimienta added a fifth ten minutes later by looping a volley over the goalkeeper following a clearance. Lopez added a second – her fourth goal in two games – in the 61^st minute, scoring from a tight angle after a nice pass from Mykaylin Rosenquist. Laura St. John completed the scoring in the 81^st minute, adding TSAFC’s seventh goal with a fine effort from distance.

The match was played as the first part of a doubleheader with USL PDL club FC Tucson, and the event, designated as “TSA Night” in order to honor the four TSA youth teams who qualified for their respective USYSA Region IV tournaments, was a massive success, filling up the stadium to the tune of 1,015 fans. “For all these people to come out and pay to see the matches, it really legitimizes the WPSL in Tucson,” said Garelick. “Tonight was a huge credit to both the players and the Tucson soccer community.”

Aloha means Hello; four teams headed to Hawaii Regionals

TUCSON – It was a great weekend – and season – to be a member of the Tucson Soccer Academy.

Four teams have advanced to the US Youth Soccer Region IV (West) Championships and will begin participating in mid-June in Honolulu. It’s the first time four teams from TSA have made the West Regionals in a season.

Games will be played at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex with more than 4,500 players and an estimated 15,000 spectators.

“The Tucson Soccer Academy’s guiding aspiration ‘Expect the Best’ has taken on a new and special meaning with the conclusion of Arizona Youth Soccer Association State Cup play,” said Ted Schmidt, president of TSA. “With the 95 Red Girls, 96 Red Girls and 98 Red Boys first place state championship finishes and the 95 Red Boys second place finish TSA has not only completed its most successful season ever but also has won more state championships than any other club in Arizona for the 2012-13 season.”

On Sunday in Casa Grande, the 95 Girls Red, a team full of college-bound players, defeated Gilbert Premiere, 3-1, to win the title. It’s the team’s second consecutive state title.

The 96 Girls Red defeated Gilbert Premiere, 4-1, in the championship. And the 98 Boys Red defeated CCV Black, 4-1, in the title game.

In winning the titles, all three advance to the regionals. Also on Sunday, the 95 Boys Red team fell to Sereno White, 1-0, in a well-played game. The 95 Boys also advance to the regionals.

"The 95 Red girls has always been a special group of players,” said co-coach Amy Garelick. “Todd and I are so very humbled to have the opportunity to spend time with this group of girls. We have been blessed to be a part of their maturation to great people as well as great players. Their back-to- back state championships are a testament to their dedication and love of the game."

Jeff Rogers, coach of the 98 Boys Red, said Sunday was all but “TSA Day” in Casa Grande.

TSA, which has more than 1,000 players, has been designated the only Nike Premiere club in Southern Arizona., in addition to other ongoing projects.

“We have just begun to expand and innovate in our recreational and developmental programs with Charlie Kendrick at the helm, put added emphasis on our girls competitive program with Todd Gaerlick as director, just founded TSA FC as a the only club in the Women’s Premiere Soccer League with Amy Gaerlick serving as head coach and begin construction this month on the new Ann Kathryn Schmidt Kickin’ It Club House,” Schmidt said. “The achievements in State Cup are the perfect initiation to a new era at TSA,” Schmidt said. “As we achieve these extraordinary successes and develop these new and exciting programs, now more than ever our families have every right to ‘Expect the Best’” from TSA.”

TSA Clubhouse coming in honor of Ann Schmidt

Next fall, TSA will have a remolded clubhouse at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park. It is expected to be ready by the fall of 2013. With the help of the local soccer community, TSA will have a facility with a workout room, a television to review game tape and office/meeting rooms.

The building will be named the Ann Kathryn Schmidt Kickin’ It Clubhouse.

"We’re going to spend at least $100,000 in renovating it and making it into a clubhouse for kids who play soccer, a place where they can do homework while they’re waiting for practice, where they can have team meetings," Ted Schmidt, president of the Tucson Soccer Academy, told the Arizona Daily Star.

The entire project and renovations will cost about $200,000, Schmidt said.

Ted is the husband of the late Ann Schmidt, who passed away nearly two years ago from terminal breast cancer. Ann was a TSA team manager for eight years. Schmidt said it’s "a marvelous example of partnership between the private sector and the county."

95, 96 Reds Having a Good Time in Germany

The 95 Reds and 96 Reds (a combined team for the trip) finished 1-0-2 after three games in Germany. The first game was a tie with Hennef FC 0-0. TSA won second game vs SV Eilendorf 1-0. The third game was a day before their return on Friday, June 7.

Colin O’Brien scored on an assist from Brett Shelton. The team returns home on June 7.
